  What Is My E-mail Address?

Unix Mail (catch-all)

What Is My E-mail Address? Unix Mail

Your E-mail address is "any_name@yourdomain.com".

You don't really have "an" E-mail address; with Unix E-mail, you have any number of e-mail addresses.

Our E-mail server catches all names going to your "domain" and places them in one account. Mail can be sent to any name, and you will still get it. If your domain was "domain.com," you could send mail to sales@domain.com, info@domain.com, fred@domain.com, sam@domain.com, et cetera, and all the messages go to a single E-mail account.

Note: in your setup instructions, you'll have seen something of the form UserID@domain, for example web2030@domain.com. That is your POP account, which you must use for checking mail, but you do not have to use that as your return address when sending E-mail.

See Checking my E-mail for more information.

See Limitations of Unix Mail for more information.

How Do I Check My E-mail?

Until now, you've most likely thought of E-mail as a single process, but in actuality, sending and receiving E-mail are two completely different things.

The E-mail address people use to send you mail need not be the same one you use to check your mail.

For Unix Mail, the POP account that all the mail actually goes to is: "UserID@yourdomain.com". So when you check your E-mail, you must check your mail at this account. For example, if your User ID was "web2030" and your Domain Name was "domain.com", you would check your E-mail with the POP name set to "web2030@domain.com".

To check your mail, first make sure that you've set-up your e-mail software correctly.

Now just connect to the Internet using your local Internet Provider, and check your mail.

See What Is My E-mail Address? for more information.

  How Do I Send E-mail?

Until now, you've most likely thought of E-mail as a single process, but in actuality, sending and receiving E-mail are two completely different things.

Mail is retrieved using POP protocol. In order to receive e-mail, you need to have a POP account.

Mail is sent using an SMTP server.

You can send e-mail with an SMTP server even if you don't have a POP account. You can check your e-mail with a POP account whether or not you have an SMTP server. They are completely separate.

Im1 is not involved in the sending of e-mail. Im1 provides you with a POP account when you order a Virtual Server. Your SMTP server is provided by your ISP (Internet Service Provider).

Do not use your domain name as your SMTP server in your e-mail software settings.

Your ISP can tell you your SMTP server. Internet Marketing 1 cannot provide you with this. Your SMTP server will probably be your ISP's name preceded by "mail-dot"

i.e. For yourisp.com the SMTP server would be: mail.yourisp.com

You will need to contact your ISP if you do not know your SMTP server.

How Do I Configure My E-mail Software?

If you don't have E-mail software, you can download Eudora Light for free. Choose which e-mail software you are using. We recommend using Eudora.

Eudora Light
Eudora Pro
Netscape Mail
Microsoft® Exchange

  Limitations of Unix Mail

We use the term "catch-all" account when referring to Unix mail, but it doesn't catch all addresses. Addresses containing a dot in the name portion will not be delivered.

Example: This address will bounce: bill.hall@domain.com

This address is fine: bill-hall@domain.com
as is this one: bill_hall@domain.com

How Many E-mail Accounts Do I Get With My Corporate Virtual Server?

When you order a Corporate Virtual Server, you get one (POP) E-mail account. You can retrieve E-mail from this account using any POP3 compatible E-mail program. This includes Netscape Mail, Eudora, and Microsoft® Exchange® (if you have Internet Mail installed). We recommend using Eudora because it has great features and a great price (free!). You can find detailed instructions for setting up Eudora to retrieve your e-mail. There are also instructions for Netscape Mail , the mail program that comes with Netscape Navigator, and Microsoft Exchange.

To check the mail that ends up in this account, simply follow these instructions.

Can I Get More E-mail Accounts?

If you need more than one (1) POP account, you can order multiple POP accounts, each independent, with its own User ID and password. However, once you go on multiple accounts per Server, you can only receive mail sent to the addresses you order; the catch-all feature will no longer work.

To order additional POP Accounts, go to our Order Form .

Contact us if you have further questions about the Mail Server.

Can My E-mail Be Forwarded to Another E-mail Account?

Absolutely! In fact, we highly recommend that you do this. Forwarding your E-mail to an account you already use makes it easier for you, and it avoids unnecessary set-up procedures.

We can forward your mail to any E-mail account in the world. This includes E-mail accounts with America Online, CompuServe or Prodigy.

Just let us know what your current address is, and we'll forward it to any account you like. You simply fill out a Trouble Ticket and include the exact E-mail address you wish your mail forwarded to. The Support Team will set up your E-mail forwarding within 24 hours. If you wish to setup mail forwarding yourself, it is very easy. FTP or Telnet into your account, and make sure you are in your home directory (/usr/local/www/data/UserID). There should be a bunch of files each beginning with a dot. Don't delete any of these! They contain very important login information. (If you're in Telnet, use the

ls -a

command to see them.

Now just create a file and name it

.forward

The only contents of this file should be the E-mail address where you want your mail to go. For multiple addresses, put one address on each line. That's it!

Can I Forward Different Addresses To Different Locations?

If you are on Unix mail, you can do so with individual POP accounts. If you only have one POP account where all mail under your domain goes (catch-all account), you cannot.

If you have a program with filters such as Eudora Pro or The Pegasus email client you could have it sent to you and then filter certain e-mail addresses to be forwarded elsewhere.

Please note if you change to individual POP accounts, the catch-all capability will be lost.

You can order additional email accounts here.

  Can I Get An Auto-Responder?

An Auto-Responder is an e-mail account that sends out an automatic message every time someone sends an e-mail there.

We offer auto-responder accounts. Ordering an auto-responder is as easy as ordering a new e-mail account. Just go to Our Services and order a auto-responder account: name@domain.com

Specify in the box that you want it to be an auto-responder. That's it!

You'll receive setup instructions. You choose your own message and input it using as text. Then, when anyone sends an e-mail to your auto-responder, they will get your message back instantly.

What Number Do I Dial Into To Retrieve My E-mail?

To obtain your E-mail you must have access to the Internet (or a special Online Service, such as CompuServe, America Online, or Prodigy. If you are using an online service, you can still get E-mail from your Corporate Virtual Server account. Just let us know what your current address is, and we'll forward it to the account you use.)

For more information on Internet Service Providers please feel free to contact us. We'll be happy to refer you to a company in your area.

  Setup Instructions for Eudora

The following instructions will work for Eudora Light and Eudora Pro.

You will need your E-mail Account Information (sent with your Virtual Server Setup Instructions) to complete this process.

  1. Start Eudora

  2. Select the "Tools" menu and click on "Options"

  3. Click on the "Getting Started" icon.

In the "POP Account" field, put in your POP account given in your original Virtual Server Confirmation message, i.e. UserID@domain-name

If you have a User ID beginning with "web" it should be of the form: webxxxxx@domain.com.

    NO QUOTES ARE NEEDED!

Under "Real Name" put whatever you like.

    Click the "Personal Information" icon.

If you have Unix mail (catch-all), then in the "Return Address" field, put whatever address you wish at your domain. This has no effect on sending your mail. What this controls is what address people will see and what address they will reply to. You do not need to put UserID@yourdomain. See What is my e-mail address? for more information.

Do not put your POP account in the "Return Address" field! Put your e-mail address. If the "Return Address" field is blank then people will be unable to reply to your e-mails.

  4. Click on the "Hosts" icon.

In the "SMTP" field you will need to put in the SMTP (Simple Mail Transfer Protocol) server used by your Internet provider. We cannot provide you with this address. Do not put your domain name here.  See sending mail for more information.

  5. Click on the "Checking Mail" icon

Choose whether to have your mail remain on your server or be moved to your hard disk. This is controlled by the "leave mail on server" box. (We strongly recommend that you always take your mail off the server, i.e. make sure the "leave mail on server" button is UNchecked, or it can get backlogged very easily).

  6. Click on the "Sending Mail" icon (scroll down).

Check the settings that you prefer.

For more information regarding Eudora Settings and other special features check out Qualcomm's Eudora Light tech support site.
